Why you need to try Sunday lunch at Otro Restaurant

EDIT - I’ve noticed a few people are reaching this page via google - sadly Otro did not survive the pandemic, but the wonderful team are still cooking up a storm at their sister restaurant New Chapter, in Canonmills. They offer an epic three course Sunday lunch, including those Yorkshires, for £29, so all is not lost.

Spoiler alert: it's actually pretty simple, there are two reasons; the food at Otro is excellent, plus it's great value.

I was invited to try the new Sunday lunch menu with a group of Edinburgh foodie friends including Ailidh of Plate Expectations, and  Edible Edinburgh.  While we were generously hosted by the restaurant, opinions etc are my own.

So, without further ado, here is the roast beef. Almost all of our party chose it as it looked so good, although I did steal a taste of Edible Edinburgh's slow cooked lamb shoulder which was excellent, meltingly tender and well spiced.

Sunday Roast with all the trimmings at Otro restaurant, Edinburgh

At £19.95 for two courses and £24.95 for three, it's an excellent value Sunday lunch, especially given the quality of the ingredients. I would recommend going for all three courses because the desserts are seriously good. My usual strategy of having two courses but sharing the starter and dessert with my husband would probably end in a fight over pudding here even though the portions are generous.

By way of comparison comparison slash incidental roundup of other great Sunday lunch spots in Edinburgh:

Just along the road Kyloe does a Sunday roast rib of beef at £100 for four guests, but only one course; The Ox also does a cracking Sunday roast, which works out at around £30 for three courses; Malmaison is £19.95 for a buffet starter and roast; the wonderful Chophouse, AKA Beef HQ, has mains starting at around £18.50; and finally, Tom Kitchin’s Scran and Scallie, my favourite ‘local’ has excellent food with meaty mains at around £19.

Otro is a relative newcomer on the Edinburgh scene, it's the younger sister to the also excellent New Chapter in Canonmills. You can find the restaurant in Edinburgh's West End, just by the Shandwick Place tram stop. The site used to be the Indian Cavalry Club, but the interior has been stylishly renovated, and the sunny dining room includes some rather dreamy watercolour wallpaper. If you are planning a party, they also have a private dining room with space for up to 42 guests. Unusually there's no room hire charge and the dining room has its own bar.

Their dessert menu currently features a Pistachio & olive oil cake which sounds wonderful, and a high summer version of the panna cotta below, with strawberry and basil.
